Senate defers screening of Rotimi Amaechi to Thursday

The Senate on Wednesday deferred the screening of minister-nominee Rotimi Amaechi to Thursday.
The development followed the inability of its Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions to submit its report on the petition against him.
The Chairman of the Committee, Sam Anyanwu, while briefing the senate, said that the committee could not meet on Tuesday following the late adjournment of plenary.
Mr. Anyanwu said that as at the time of adjournment of plenary, most of the members of the committee were “too tired to meet”.
He promised that the committee would meet on Wednesday so as to finalise the report on Mr. Amaechi and submit it on Thursday to enable his screening.
The development reduces to nine, the number of ministerial nominees to be screened on Wednesday.
Among the nominees to be screened are Chris Ngige, former Lagos governor Babatunde Fashola and Ibe Kachikwu.
Mr. Amaechi’s nomination is being opposed by “Integrity Group”, which petitioned the Senate alleging that Mr. Amaechi had not answered questions on alleged financial misappropriation when he was governor of Rivers state.
Although the Committee met on Monday, they could not deliberate on the petition as the allegations contained in the petition were said to be before a court of competent jurisdiction. (NAN)

Oyinlola, Bello, Others Alleged To Be On 2nd Ministerial List
Just 12 days after the first batch of ministerial nominees was sent to the Senate for confirmation, the second batch has found its way to the media.
The list was submitted to the Senate President Bukola Saraki yesterday, October 12, by the chief of staff to the president Alhaji Abba Kyari accompanied my the senior special assistant to the president on National Assembly matters, Senator Ita Enang.
But with the identities of the nominees still masked in secrecy, dependable sources have disclosed to Vanguard, the prominent names who made it to the second ministerial list.
They include:
1. Chairman of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, Barr Mohammed Bello (Adamawa)
2. Former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun)
3. Former Chairman of the National Population Commission (NPC), Chief Festus Odimegwu (Imo)
4. Former National President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN (Ondo)
5. Former spokesman of the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), Osita Okechukwu (Enugu)
6. Former ANPP governorship candidate in Abia, Ikechi Emenike (Abia).
7. Hadiza Abdullahi
8. Adamu Adamu (Bauchi)
9. Hajia Bukar Ibrahim, the former first lady of Yobe State (Yobe)
10. Senator Heineken Lokpobiri (Bayelsa)
11. James Ocholi, SAN (Kogi)
12. Anthony Anwuka, a professor of education administration, who was secretary to the government of Imo state
13. Isaac Adewole, a professor of obstetrics and gynaecology

The submission of the second batch of ministerial nominees for confirmation, comes just before the Senate begins screening exercise and possible confirmation of the nominees today, October 13.
The screening exercise is billed to take three days.

Rivers’s Senators Couldn't Stop Amaechi’s Screening
Ahead of Tuesday, October 13, Senate’s screening of ministerial nominees, the former governor of Rivers state, Rotimi Amaechi has been given a clean bill of health to appear the upper chamber for screening.

The Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions on Monday, October 12, had dropped the consideration of the petitions it received against the nomination of Amaechi.
The Senate had said that at least two out of the three senators from each state must endorse the nomination of ministerial nominee before confirmation can be carried out.
However, the spokesman of the upper chamber, Dino Melaye, had disclosed that the endorsement by two senators of a ministerial nominee would not be the only yardstick for confirmation as the Senate will consider other criteria.
A Rivers state senator, George Thompson Sekibo and his two others colleagues from state had presented a petition alleging that Amaechi misapprpraited state fund to the tune of N70 billion.
The petition that was authored by a Port Harcourt based group, The Integrity Group, according to close watchers of the unfolding drama in the state, the petition was sent with the aim to prevent the former governor from being confirmed as a minister.
The Senator Samuel Anyanwu-led committee after a meeting with the ministerial nominee at the National Assembly noted the said petition which was drawn from the report of the judicial panel of inquiry was already a subject of court case hence the committee would not want to preempt the decision of the court.
It was learnt that Ameachi was in company with his former commissioner of information, Ibim Semenitari and two members of House of Representatives.
The former governor told committee that the matter in which invitation was extended to him was already a subject of litigation.
Anyanwu said, while throwing out the petition against Ameachi ,that based on the present circumstance and in line with Section 7 of the Senate Standing Rules, it would amount to sub-judice to consider the petition.
